While Shelby’s Cobra gets all the press, it’s hard to tell a real one from a cheap replica. Sadly, too many forget that the Cobra sprang from the wonderful AC Ace, which were powered by a series of inline sixes that ranged from AC’s own to Bristol and even a Ford Zephyr unit that packed real wallop.

Another lovely Giorgetto Giugiaro design while at Bertone, the 1967 Fiat 850 Spider was so much fun to drive and pleasing to the eyes that nobody seemed to mind how slow they were going. This little gem was all about driving pleasure, which it offered up by the barrels-full.

In the 1980s, something about the Testarossa's design was nagging at Richard Straman. Suddenly, it dawned on him: It would be even better as a convertible. The famous coachbuilder reengineered the car as a drop-top to stunning results. Michael Jackson bought one in black for a Pepsi commercial.

Thomas Harrington Ltd. built only a handful of fastback Le Mans Coupe bodies for Sunbeam Alpine chassis during the 1960s, but only one for the Sunbeam Tiger, the Ford V-8-powered “pocket rocket” designed by Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles. Behold the 1965 Sunbeam Tiger Mk I Coupe by Harrington.

In the 1990s Chrysler's design team was on a roll, as shown by its 1998 Plymouth Pronto Spyder concept. A crisp-handling, svelte, mid-engined canyon-carver, the Pronto Spyder was aimed squarely at the Porsche Boxster and Toyota MR2. Alas, it was not to be.

Years ago, at the height of the first OPEC oil embargo, dad wanted a more miserly Ford than his thirsty ol' LTD. What he brought home shocked mother: Found on the back of the bargain lot was a sweet RWD 2-door with a 4-speed, 1.6 liter twin cam engine, white with a green stripe: A '65 Lotus Cortina.

Replacing the Interceptor would never be easy, but this William Towns-designed Jensen GT prototype is just one more interesting "what if" from the British motor industry. Slated to be powered by the same Lotus twin-cam found in the Jensen Healey, financial woes sealed its fate.

Steve McQueen was always a bit of an outlaw, and his 1958 Porsche 356 1600 Super Speedster reflected that same cantankerous attitude. It was one of the few to come from the factory painted black.

The Miata may have claimed the sports car crown but Honda's del Sol was no slouch, either. Light, safe, fuel-efficient, and oh-so-tossable in the turns, the del Sol is a JDM tuners delight. Honda sold 'em by the score.

If only Parisian coachbuilders Hibbard & Darrin had built A 1932 Lincoln Model KB Boattail Speedster it might have looked something like this, but they didn't. It took retired GM design director David Holls and collector Greg Bilpuch to dream it up, and the talented hands of Marcel DeLay to make it.

Those of a certain age will recall when Chrysler's show cars were something to behold. The 2002 Dodge M80 was no exception. It was a real firecracker, a "son of Powerwagon" concept that was a small sized pick-'em-up with gobs of personality. Why it didn't make it to production is a head-scratcher.

The 1974 Elite was a bold move for Lotus that firmly buried its kit car past. It was a full four-seater, light, strong, and offered superb handling on par with any of its GT rivals. A landmark design, It was unfortunately unreliable as hell. There was nothing else quite like it on the market.

Chevy may have been a bit late to the pony car party but that doesn't mean that when they finally showed up they came unprepared. The Camaro Z/28 more than made up for lost time slips and was as close to a bonafide competition car for the street as the option box allowed.
